About the Event

What is a Wassail?

Wassail is a traditional celebration that invites good spirits into the orchards to grant the trees bounteous harvests of apples and fruits later in the year.

It can take place on various dates between mid December and mid-late January, but most often on twelfth night, now 6th January, but previously it was 17th January.

In 2026 we are celebrating the annual Wassail at Dalton Moor Farm on 10th January in the afternoon.

Songs are sung, Poems are spoken, Dances are danced.

Toast or cake is often placed or hung in the branches of the trees. This encourages birds into the trees and they eat little bugs that may otherwise cause disease for the trees.
